NZ Best Awards – Bronze

We were engaged to develop a small scale identity for Ngarimu Blair, a consultant and liaison between local council & Ngāti Whātua who acted as Spokesperson, as well as fulfilling a public relations role.

We drew inspiration from Māori artist Ralph Hotere utilising minimalist, restrained forms. The handcrafted typography and simple colour palette drew inspiration from Hotere’s work in his book ‘Black Light’ with particular reference to his paintings of timeless, striking lines against a deep, black background.

The use of overlapping lines represent ‘Nga Tira’ or distinct streams and lines of thought and action in a sea of possibilities (or ‘Te Kore’ in Maori cosmology).

The considered use of reflective blue foil accentuates the significance of lines within Hotere’s work, adds an element of quality, and contrasts beautifully against the heavy, brown packaging board we selected for the printed collateral.
